Penzance Is a Wonderful Part of the South West To See.

By Ian Motram

The Nearest town to Land's End is Penzance which is sheltered by Mounts Bay.

'Pen Sans' as Penzance was first known in traditional Cornish language, translates as Holy Headland because of a chapel in close proximity to the harbour. The town and surrounding area were renowned centuries ago as being a popular haunt for pirates. Penzance retains lots of historical evidence going back centuriesand this is still visible today. The town has retained much of its extraordinary character through strict planning laws.

With its warm and welcoming atmosphere Penzance now has a wealth of artistic talent on display. Whilst it at one time was dependant on fishing as its main income, Penzance now caters principally for tourism. Its great popularity has provided a steady increase of visitors each year.

Despite being hidden away in the furthest corner of the UK, access is straightforward by road due to an excellent network of dual carriageways and motorways. Bus and railway links to the town are also straightforward.

It is a fantastic town and you will find plenty to explore locally. The area benefits from one of the warmest climates in the United Kingdom due to the warm Atlantic Gulf Stream which gives it a temperate climate throughout the year and encourages spring flowers to bloom early.

In this part of the country during the time of Queen Victoria huge quantity's of exotic and stunning flora and fauna were introduced. Due to its stunning range of unusual and exotic plants, the area has a distinctly romantic, Mediterranean feel to it.

In June there is the Golowan Festival, when thousands of visitors descend on Penzance making accommodation hard to come by. This Festival is based around an ancient tradition that celebrates the arrival of Midsummer. At this fantastic event you can enjoy live music, art and a variety of parades and be thoroughly entertained for ten whole days. If all that is not enough there is also a traditional fair with rides, huge fires and firework displays to entertain you. Through the streets of Penzance you will witness a gorgeous array of bright banners and fresh flowers.

One other very popular Festival in the area is the Newlyn Fish Festival , held every year on the last Monday in August. The Newlyn Fish Festival celebrates the most essential ingredient of Cornish life; fishing, which is fishing. Whilst the festival is on the harbour is filled with many different kind of boatsand in the market a range of locally caught fish are on display. A number of stalls are available and also entertainment.

There are many different places to eat out in Penzance and ample shopping facilities. A selection of ancient monuments have survived in the local area, and provide interesting opportunities for a day out.

There are many art studio's and galleries in the area because Penzance has the biggest concentration of artists in the UK outside of London. You can see work by the famous artist Stanhope Forbes at the art gallery based at Penlee Park. You could pay a visit to a number of terrific private galleries in the area, or perhaps the Tate, in the nearby town of St Ives.
