Pregnant and Prepared

By Mia Fowler

So you've done everything right so far. You've jumped for joy, took a double look, and confirmed. You're pregnant! Congratulations! While pregnancy is one of the most exciting and life changing events you will ever experience, it is also one of the most confusing. Therefore, it is perfectly fine to have more than a few questions. Here is a short and condensed guide to dealing with your first few weeks of pregnancy and all of the changes that it entails.

The first thing you need to do before you call your friends and announce to your family is to go to the doctor. While this may seem redundant since you just had your first test, it really is necessary. Not only can a visit to the doctor serve to give you more accurate results than a standard store bought pregnancy test, but the visit can help you be sure that there are no complications. This way, if you happen to not be pregnant, you will not look silly by announcing a false alarm.
Another thing that you'll want to discuss with your doctor immediately in the case of you being pregnant is prenatal vitamins. These can be prescribed or bought over the counter at a drug store. They are usually less than a few dollars but are invaluable when it comes to the baby's development in the first couple of weeks. Ideally you should be taking prenatal vitamins before you even conceive because there are very important during the baby's first few weeks before you are even aware you are pregnant. Make sure to discuss with your doctor which kind of prenatal vitamins are best for you and your baby.

The next step is announcing your good news. While some couples find they would rather just tell everyone at home in a standard sit down conversation, some couples prefer to get creative. One idea is to have your first ultrasound pictures framed and presented to the grandparents and/or other important people you would like to tell. The most important thing to remember is that no matter how other people feel this is your pregnancy and you should be happy.

While it is not an absolute necessity to shop for the baby this early into the pregnancy it can be hard to wait until you know the gender. So feel free to do some shopping ahead of time. Stick to a gender neutral palette until the sex is confirmed. You should probably also start stocking up on items that don't require a gender specific guideline, such as diapers, bottle, pacifiers, etc. You can never have to many diapers and bottles on hand.

Your diet is another thing that you need to take into consideration. While your body will naturally help you crave the right things, it is still important to do your best to study

While your body will naturally help you crave the right things, it is still important to do your best to study up on the right diet for your pregnancy. Your body type can be a big factor in this, so plan your diet meticulously, and as with anything regarding your pregnancy, consult your doctor before beginning any diet.
