Rarely Heard Facts About Babies

By Elena Cabral

Nothing is as interesting as learning how children develop and grow. The way babies grow from a small ball of cells into fully functioning human beings boggles the brains of most people. There is a lot more to infancy than you might think. There is more to being a baby than simply being cute. Babies have very specific needs that must be met or they will not grow up properly. There is so much more to infancy development than most people realize. Good parents learn everything they can about how their children are developing, even in the early stages of infancy.

When a baby is born his or her skull plates are not fused. This is one of the main reasons that adults need to be careful when they are holding newborn babies. If you are not careful when you are handling your baby's head, you could accidentally do quite a bit of damage so tread lightly and carefully when you hold your newborn! Thankfully, after a few months, the soft spot won't be so soft or nearly as sensitive as it is right after birth. Don't get too careless though because it can take as long as eighteen months for the frontal skull plates to harden all the way!

Most babies have the ability to recognize different types of music before they are born. By the time a woman is thirty four weeks into her pregnancy the unborn baby can identify different sounding songs. A baby can spend more than a month in utero listening to and appreciating different songs. It has been reported that some babies will even start moving in time to a song's rhythm. This means that your child is already showing his or her music preferences-while in the womb! Isn't that great?

Did you know that at one point your baby had a tail? It's a fact! Your baby's tail starts to form at the same time that the other organs like the brain and the heart and the lungs begin to develop.

As they mature in the womb the organs inside the baby develop but the tail usually ends up disappearing-the body takes over and the tail disappears up into the body. The whole process is similar to the way tadpoles grow up to be tail-less frogs. Some people, however, have tails that do not completely disappear and they are born with them still somewhat intact. From here the parents can choose whether to have the tail removed or to hope that it disappears over time.
