Importance of Life Vests on Pets

By Scott O. Golden

In our whole lifetime, we have had water dogs as pets. They accompany us when we go swimming, move out on the boat and in the tiny fishing vessel. Swim if you may, these dogs can beat you. You can easily reach the lake on foot because the distance is not that far away and we live there.During those long, hot July and August days, we will take the dogs in the morning and go for a swim. Everybody are able to enjoy and at the same time exercise under the bright sun. As a young boy, my son loved to ride on the raft and paddle his way in the lake. What's interesting is that Poppy, our blond Lab, also wants to ride along with him. She became his guardian the whole time they were on the water having fun under the sun.

We had a very fine boat during that time. It can accommodate six persons. The boat was almost our home. And it wasn't unusual in the early morning hours to hear a small motor-boat docking along side ours, waking us up. It would be my mom and my dad. What I most liked about it was that they always brought us something to eat for breakfast. My mom would fill the biscuits with ham or bacon, eggs and cheese and that's what we eat. It's so delicious! Together with my family, taking pleasure in eating a delectable meal on the boat as the sun starts to rise, what more could I ask for?

Our parent's very little pet dog can't swim so she wears a life vest all the time. Just like every dog, she still enjoyed tagging along in our family spree even though she doesn't very much like the water.Just as it is important for humans to wear life vests, it is the same with our canine members of the family.

A life vest that is fitting for your pet dog's body must be on him/her if ever both of you are going on a trip on the waters. Be sure that it is securely fastened on him/her to avoid slip-ups and that your dog has adapted to it. Your dog might feel awkward if the buckles and straps are not correctly positioned, so check on it. Life vests offer a leverage for you to aid your pet dog out of the water if the incident requires you to.Choose bright colors so your pet can be spotted easily. Uniformly place your dog in its life vest so that it's weight is equally distributed. In that way, he/she won't be outbalanced. Safety guidelines for your pup is similar to humans. Heat exhaustion is a common result from overexposure under the sun and so to avoid that while on the boat, stay under a protected area from the sun and drink a lot of water. Secure your dog's feet from the hot flooring of the boat. Dock on the shore and place him down if required to take the edge off of your dog. Not every dog enjoys tagging along on boat excursions. Queasiness in people can also occur in dogs.

Obviously, if you have a very young or aging dog, you want to be particularly aware of their limits. Your dog can be in a much worse predicament if he/she continues to be out in the heat, wind and water. Your dog should never be attached to the boat.If the boat ever sinks, your beloved pet will go down with it.

Above all, always use common sense. You and your children wear life vests, shouldn't your dog wear one, too?
