Rarely Heard Facts About Babies

By Mihaela Wurt

Most people understand that babies eat a lot, sleep a lot and go through a lot of diapers. Has someone taught you why a baby's body moves the way it does? Has someone taught you why a baby grows up in stages? So many people do not understand the little things about why a baby grows the way it does. For others though, the subject of infant and early childhood development is something that they make the time to learn about.

A baby is not born with a solid skull. The non-fused skull is one of the reasons that so many adults are afraid to hold newborn children. This is why that space on the back of a newborn's head is called the soft spot and you need to handle it with care or you could do some serious damage to your baby. About three months after your baby is born its skull plates will have started to fuse together and you won't have to be quite so careful with the soft spot at the back of his or her head. It can take as long as a year and a half for the frontal plates of your baby's skull to harden, so don't assume that the worst is over when the soft spot calcifies together.

Did you know that some babies are born with teeth? Still other babies are born with no hope of having their teeth come in until they hit their first birthdays.

This is one of the reasons that babies will sometimes choose one toy over another. What this means is that all of the black and white stuff that you think of as ugly is actually better for your baby's eyesight and brain development than the more traditional and popular pastel based decorations and toys. Swimming and the holding of breath are instinctual for babies. This instinct starts to fade very quickly, though. Because babies are born knowing these things, many people believe that women should have water births. Apparently the transition from the womb to independent life is easier with a water birth because the babies have spent nine months "swimming" inside mommy's womb. They believe that a "regular" birth in a brightly lit hospital room is far more traumatic for the baby and that it makes it harder for them to accept that they are no longer physically a part of their mothers.

Consuming non mercury fish is incredibly healthy for you, but double check the type of fish you want to eat because doctors everywhere agree that you want to avoid mercury consumption while you are pregnant. You've probably already had several people, including your doctor, recommend eating salmon because it is mercury free and contain a bunch of other stuff that is good for you and your baby. It is believed that eating fish both improves the brain function of a fetus and sets them up for superior communication skills later in life and that women who do not eat fish will not be able to pass these things along to their children. This theory is still just that: a theory, so do not beat yourself up for neglecting your baby's brain if you don't eat fish, can't eat fish or simply haven't eaten that much fish during your pregnancy.
