Having twins is splendidly rewarding but it comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the first and best things you can do as a soon to be twin mummy is to surround yourself with support. This doesn't start when your twins arrive, it need's to start when you are pregnant with twins.
A twin pregnancy is a high risk pregnancy and so your antenatal care is going to be more frequent and more thorough. This could mean you require additional time off from work and even your other half may need additional time off from work which could put financial strains into the mix especially if you're a business owner or self employed.
Twin pregnancy can mean heightened pregnancy symptoms and you may need more time to rest. During the last trimester of twin pregnancy you may find that driving an automobile is not possible and that generally you won't be moving around too quickly. Worst case eventuality you might even be put on bed rest. If you already have children then you might need additional support for childcare or doing the "school runs". You can see already how vital it is to get a support system even before your twins have arrived.
What will occur if your twins should arrive prematurely? What will happen if they need a stay in a neonatal baby unit? You are then split between home and special care baby unit which can truly be terribly difficult if you already have other youngsters. It can be a terribly emotional time and you'll need support. I do not say that these are the things which will occur and am sorry to paint such a bleak picture but this the real possibilities when having twins.
When your twins do make their appearance into the world be it prematurely or full term you're going to require some more support. If you've had a delivery by c-section there'll be a period of recovery and a time whereby you can't drive or do anything more strenuous than lifting your babies. You'll have 2 newly born babies feeding relentlessly keeping you awake for the majority of the night; you'll become very beat yet still required to deal with the day ahead. You still need to run your already fast-paced life but now with twins!
So , to reiterate get your support network early; family and friends are only to pleased to help and you should not feel bad for accepting help. Seek external help from other families who've had twins as these will be the ones who can relate to what you are going to be experiencing. The web is chock-full of twin parenting blogs and sites including my own site offering Twins Support.
