What We Can Do To Decrease The Effects Of OCD

By Kara E. Pellegrino

Is there a reason why so many individuals view OCD is a negative light? I used to think the same idea until I had a very in-depth conversation with someone who recently attended a seminar with scientist, Keith Raniere, which brought a new idea into my head. There are certain advantages that an obsessive individual personifies that can be used to actually assist their way of living, according to the organization that was founded by this scientist, Keith Raniere. Although I'm not positive what he means, I find the idea certainly worth considering.

If not dealt with in a constructive manner, OCD can become a disastrous issue in many people's lives and can actually destroy many aspects of it. Some people experience great stress over their compulsions, or rather what will happen if they don't act out their compulsions. If something such as a locked door is associated with being stole from or invaded, then an obsessive person clearly thinks about this quite often. You cannot keep an individual who suffers from OCD from doing things that even though might be irrational, or unnecessary, are still mandatory to do in their eyes. You may have viewed one instance of someone who suffers from OCD through Jack Nicholson's portrayal of one in As Good As It Gets.

Many doctors suggest different methods for dealing with OCD. By not performing some of their compulsive behaviors, they can help keep it down. The largest worry that OCD suffers experience is not having control over something if there is ever a problem that could happen, which is exactly the thing they have to do in this situation.

Is this really the only method available to help get people from having this disorder and in turn making them feel fear? Are there any methods one can deal with their compulsive behaviors in a positive way, and harness them for forward-moving action, as Mr. Raniere suggests?

In scenarios where the OCD has not reached its full potential, it can be used as an asset to some, like compulsively counting things, which is something I often do, as a means to do something better. Since I have this quality to count things, I have become very good at it and can complete jobs that involve numbers much better than money other people can.

Believing there is a way, I feel it would be worth it to look into. As with many things, when we can find a way to work with what we already have -- instead of work against it -- we can often times find ourselves to be uniquely unstoppable! The great thing about having OCD is that we can all work together to change the way it is seen, to bring it to a more positive perspective so that other who suffer from it can see the good in themselves.
