The Best Pond Pumps To Use

By Carrie Gaudette

Pond pumps are a necessary part of your garden pond installation. They offer a valuable service to the water inside the garden pond by helping to keep it unpolluted and they also allow circulation within the water. Always keeping the water moving in the pond helps you to preserve the necessary oxygen level in the water, this is required by the species of fish along with other plant life residing in the pond to be able to stay alive. Also by generating motion in the water it can help to avoid mosquitoes breeding in the water.

When choosing a pump for your garden pond it is essential to take into account the size of the pond, and exactly how much water it includes, obviously the larger your pond the bigger the pump you should have for the correct amount of water flow, and you also will require a more powerful pump if you have other water features like a waterfall or water fountain.

You can generally select from two types of pumps, submersible and external.

The submersible versions can be placed under the water within the pond and are generally the best choice when you have a small pond. They are also cheaper and since they are placed in the water they produce much less noise than the exterior models. They don't have to have a lot of maintenance either because you just have to ensure that they won't get clogged up by dirt and leaves in the pond every now and again.

They are also obtainable in electrically driven or solar powered versions, the solar types offer the advantage of not requiring a power source to work.

So that you can determine what size of water pump you require, you will need to evaluate the GPH (gallons per hour) this is basically the water movement rate for your pond. Depending on the size of the pump all of the available pumps will have a different GPH level. The ideal way to calculate this is that the GPH has to be at least half of the total volume of water in your pond. For instance if your pond contains 600 gallons of water you should have a pump with at least a 300 GPH capability and don't forget to increase this if you have a fountain or other water features. This will make sure that the water pump has adequate power to keep the water moving easily.

For a large pond with many water features an external pump is most likely the most suitable option, as this will provide a more effective solution, but they also can generate more noise and use more electric power.

Pond pumps can be a basic requirement for your garden pond, selecting the right one will guarantee that your pond will stay clean and in good shape.
