Can Chickens Make Good Pets?

By Daleim Nust

In this article we'll discuss some daily joint support formula options which you may want to consider for treating your pets. Like humans; cats, dogs, and yes, even horses (to name but a few types of pets) can suffer with joint problems, and suffer with the same afflictions, like arthritis and osteoarthritis. As cats and dogs age they may show increasing signs of joint problems, and excess weight is one of the contributory factors in this problem.

While the idea of a chicken being your new pet and best friend may sound appealing, and rest assured that it can be, keep in mind one of the biggest limitations: Chickens just don't make very good house pets. That's not to say that they're bad pets, just that keeping them inside your house will quickly lead to messes for you and troubles for your chicken. Your feathered friend is best kept outside in the yard with a warm coop and plenty of space to run around, depending on the breed of course.

Most poultry owners choose to go for the clucking variety in pets not simply because of the birds themselves, but also because they can provide more than just companionship.

Yes, we all know that chickens can give us eggs, and if you think you can handle it, they can become dinner as well (though just consider how hard it will be to cook and eat your pet when the time comes). Beyond this, depending on your involvement with your chicken you can easily start taking it around in the poultry show circuit and start trying for trophies and ribbons.

A safer option would be to take fish oil containing omega 3 fatty acids, and vitamin E which are said to be good choices as these have important anti-inflammatory benefits not just with pets... but also for humans too. Using NSAIDS may not provide your pet with an immediate effect, but over time it's said to help reduce the inflammation and to keep the joints healthy.

With regards to pet tissue transplants I feel that the same questions and apprehensions will be raised. If you are considering signing your pet up to the Pet Donor Register then please do talk to all other members of your family about it before making a decision; it is important to consider everyone's opinion. It is also important to note that pets don't have a voice and so the decision is entirely up to the owners. People may not allow their pets to be a tissue donor as the pet themselves cannot say whether or not they'd like to be a donor.

Anyone who tells you that chickens don't make good pets is probably misled. Chickens make great pets, though just not the sort of pet you're used to. If you have a farm and the desire, why not give it a shot today?
