Doing A Backyard garden Can Be Fun With Proper Preparation

By Vanessa Summer

If you ever spend some time in planning, planting an outdoor garden can be a fun and rewarding experience. If you don't properly prepare, you can have a very discouraging experience. There could possibly be a garden who knows where in the world that sprang up overnight with no work other than throwing seeds on the ground, but the majority of gardens require hard work and thorough preparation.

Developing a garden you can easily deal with can be more successful than simply having a large garden. Don't try to grow anything and everything, simply plant what you feel you can handle. The area you choose for your garden must be sunny, and have a source of water nearby. Try to have an area that receives no less than six hours of sunlight especially if you plan on growing vegetables. Good, rich dirt will make your gardening much easier, so find a spot with the soil neutral in pH, with lots of organic material, well-drained, and fertile soil. Perfect soil requires 45% minerals, 25% air, 25% water and 5% organic matter.

When your soil isn't going to meet the standard, then you may need to work on the soil a bit. Although it's just a small portion, it's important that you have the right variety of organic material to make your garden thrive. Including some organic matter to any form of soil, whether sandy, humus, or clay, will be a benefit. Adding two to three inches of natural matter across the soil surface can break up the clay in soil or maintain more water in sandy soil. Well-rotted manure, grass clippings, sawdust, peat moss, and leaves are some of the good sources of organic matter.

Adding nitrogen fertilizer supports the decomposition process of the organic materials, and so you will want to use it combined with the organic mulch. Likewise, you'll want to till the earth thoroughly before planting your garden. Tilling the soil with allow air to flow through and keep the soil from hardening. The soil really should not be tilled too early in the spring because muddy soil won't break down sufficiently, causing mud clods that choke the roots. Once the garden soil is ready, you are going to plant vegetables or fruits that are proper for the time of year. Check the rear of the seed package to find the best time to plant, since it might be different for each plant.

It is a lot of fun that can be had and money that can be saved when you've got your own successful garden. Any time you plan adequately, you should always have a good harvest.
