New and Unusual Baby Facts

By Sofia Andrade

You might already have a fair amount of baby knowledge. You know that they take a while to recognize people. Most people already know that babies are able to identify their mothers right after they have been born. You've probably learned that babies develop at their own rate. Baby's do not follow a pre-set schedule for milestones. You might be surprised to learn that there are plenty of other things to learn about child development and babies. The infancy period is one of the most interesting of all areas of human development. The number of things that happen between conception and a baby's first complete sentence would astonish you. Babies might not look like they do much all day but under the surface they are working like crazy to grow up!

By the time most women learn that they are pregnant, their babies already have pumping hearts. It only takes about three weeks for a baby's heart to form and start working. This is usually when most women find out that they are pregnant. Are you impressed that it only takes biology twenty one days to build a beating heart from something that starts out as a single celled organism? Isn't it marvelous that biology made the foundation of your most important muscle in such a short time?

It is their colors that make some toys more popular among babies than others. Pastels are meant more for an adult's sense of cuteness while the black and white things that are so often turned down are actually better for your son or daughter's development.

Even though it can take a few months for a baby to form specific words, their range of vocals is quite impressive. This is because the larynx (or voice box) is still developing after babies are born. It is due to this that a baby can make more sounds than an adult can make. Babies quickly start to assign the sounds they make to the things that they want or need. This is why a mother can usually tell if her baby's cries mean that he is hungry or tired or that he needs a diaper change. A baby's first word is usually one that he can make using the consonants made by the front of his mouth and a couple of vowel sounds. It is because of this that a baby's first word is usually "dada" and not "mama": dada is easier to imitate and is almost always a surprise to both the parent and the baby!

While most doctors recommend against consuming mercury while a woman is pregnant, eating non mercury forms of fish can be quite healthy. You've probably already had several people, including your doctor, recommend eating salmon because it is mercury free and contain a bunch of other stuff that is good for you and your baby. There are those who say that a woman who eats fish regularly during her pregnancy will give birth to babies with better developed brains and a better capacity for communication than babies carried by women who did not eat fish regularly during their pregnancies. This theory is still just that: a theory, so do not beat yourself up for neglecting your baby's brain if you don't eat fish, can't eat fish or simply haven't eaten that much fish during your pregnancy.
