The Numerous Uses Brought About By Outdoor Hammocks

By Jill Nicholson

Rest, holidays, relaxing, and quietness are among the words that come to mind when one's talks about hammocks. Spending a few hours in relaxation while lingering peacefully in the comfort of your backyard or porch can best be done using outdoor hammocks. Aside from such, hammocks have also been proven to provide a number of health benefits.

Slung by cords from supports at each end, a hammock is a sling - or a swinging bed or couch - usually made from fabric, netting, or canvas. They were widely used by seafarers and discoverers. As such, it is not surprising to learn that hammocks were introduced to the world by Christopher Columbus. Nonetheless, hammocks, according the archeologists, were first invented by the Mayan civilization. Mayans then used these items to protect themselves from snakes, other crawling dwellers, water, dirt, and other unsanitary conditions by elevating themselves off the ground when sleeping.

The bark of the Hamack tree originally provided the material for the first outdoor hammocks-and hence, where it got it derived its present name. Over time, hamacks were replaced by the Sisal plant-a plant resembling an Aloe Vera plant and grows more abundantly than hamacks. Hammocks were introduced to other countries in the world through extensive trade routes. Christopher Columbus was first introduced it in the Caribbean during his journey to the New World. Today, hammocks are used worldwide as beds or furniture.

As was aforementioned, a number of advantages may be derived from the use of hammocks. First is their versatile use which allows them to be used in the house, in the garden, or on the terrace. They are also great travel companions especially for campers and mountain hikers where they can stop, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Also, just like during the time of great seafarers and discoverers, hammocks are a great company in ships, boats, or yachts. Also, they usually fit all sizes of people. As such everyone in the family may enjoy the swinging motions of the hammock without needing to purchase one for each member of the family.

Aside from their versatile use, both indoor and outdoor hammocks also provide a number of health benefits. Their usefulness has been proven to reduce back and neck pain by allowing one's weight to be distributed over the surface area of the body, and hence, reducing the amount of weight that rests on the muscles. As such, many doctors and therapist have been prescribing the use of hammock to patients with chronic pains of the back and leg. It is also used to increase concentration. Various studies have shown that the swinging movement caused by it stimulates the part of the brain called the cerebral cortex which is the part responsible for one's concentration.

Rest and relaxation are what our tired minds need especially in today's fast paced world. As such, both indoor and outdoor hammocks are must-have pieces of furniture where these two can be accomplished. Aside from R&R, a number of other health benefits can also be derived from their use.
