The perfect flower for you

By Nathan Ogilvy

Flowers have been sent as gifts for a long time and cover many occasions from congratulations to condolences, appreciation and love to get well soon wishes there is a bloom that fits the bill. With flower delivery services now easily available you can send greetings and messages anywhere across the globe. However, with all the choice about, it can be a little daunting selecting exactly the right flowers to send.

Since Victorian times in particular, meanings have been assigned to plants. Flowers were given as messages in times of strict chaperoning and rules around courtship and romance. Straightforward messages such as 'eternal love' signified by primroses and 'faithfulness' by blue violets were common, but with different coloured roses and varieties of tulips things got a little more complicated; yellow roses may mean friendship but could also indicate extreme betrayal. Some blooms represent death, despair or sorrow and others may signify evil intent towards the recipient. Few people know or care about these meanings nowadays but it is nice to check before you send to ensure your flower delivery does not have a double meaning

There are so many places to buy blooms, but it can be difficult to find exactly what you want. If you are looking for something a little unusual then an internet search is probably the quickest way; you should be able to find a specialist supplier that will be able to ship the bouquet to you. Markets or florists are best if you want to browse and see the actual flowers; markets are perfect for putting together your own bouquet whereas florists will create one for you if you feel that your artistic ability isn't up to the challenge. Picking wildflowers yourself sounds romantic, but is illegal in most cases so best avoided. If you have a neighbour with green fingers you could buy flowers from them, the ultimate in fresh and unique with minimum 'flower miles'

It's a good idea to check whether the recipient of your bouquet has any strong feelings about particular plants, colours or scents as some flowers have bad associations for some people such as lilies being linked with funerals. A mix of blooms always goes down well, especially if you have included a particular favourite. Fresh flowers are a must, ideally choose them yourself and include a few that are still in bud which will make your bouquet longer lasting. Check out reviews of flower delivery companies before using them to ensure you will get good quality.

Months and even days have a flower associated with them which is a nice choice for birthday flowers and mixing different coloured roses or red roses with other types can avoid the clich associated with a dozen red roses. Add a bottle of wine or champagne to a celebratory flower delivery, or possibly balloons or chocolates for other occasions such as Mothering Sunday. Condolence flowers should be kept quite staid and muted, whites mixed with dark purples or blues can give the appropriate effect.

Choosing the flowers themselves is only the first step, you then need to arrange them. Bunches of complimentary colours tied with a ribbon look pretty and florists and mail order companies often include a vase in their arrangements which makes the gift a little longer lasting. A single bloom can be romantic, but be careful it doesn't make you look cheap! Formal arrangements for centre pieces and church displays are usually set in foam bases to keep them in place, but this is much less common for gifts these days. A plant in bloom is a nice alternative to flowers, but tends to have less of an impact than a mixed bunch of colours in a bouquet.

There is a wide range of prices for flowers and getting flowers delivered, the cheapest method is to visit markets locally but you will usually have to make up any arrangement yourself. There are some good online deals to be had, but be sure to check the quality of the plants where possible as they may not always match the pictures. The flowers themselves may also be grown a long way away so beware of this if you are environmentally conscious. On special occasions such as Valentine's Day and Mothering Sunday flower delivery can rocket in price, try and order well in advance for these times where possible.

Flowers make a great gift for anyone on any day, or why not treat yourself to some. A fresh bouquet or plant will brighten your day and put a smile on your face. With so many choices of arrangement, colour, style and places to purchase it should be easy to find the perfect way to say whatever you want to say.
