Why an Optimum Website Navigation Structure is so Important

By Daniel Barraud

Along with other elements, your site navigation has to be dead-on because it has a huge impact on so many things. This aspect of your site will most definitely influence your site visitors, and that will in turn affect your rankings. In short, you will suffer as will your business if you neglect this part of your business site. So let's quickly move ahead and examine how you can improve the navigation on your site.

A lot of sites, like blogs, come with a major part of navigation already done - but there is still more to it. You need to be mindful of optimizing for search engines plus your readers, and that is a lot to think about. What you always need to focus on is making things as simple and as easy to understand as possible. Obviously there have been so many advances in technology and software programming as well.We have seen some pretty clever new methods of doing navigation, and some are really pretty impressive. Of course you should never make your visitors look too far to find something and do it with minimal clicks.

People value consistency in all things, and your navigation setup must include that principle, as well. It shouldn't keep changing from page to page, there should be a level of consistency so that your visitors aren't confused. Give serious thought to your anchor text, and what most people do (who know what they are doing) is use the keywords they want to rank for. There are unspoken and unknown factors and qualities that people respond to, and a consistent navigation structure would be one of them.

One of the most critical pages on all sites is the home page since it is from there that all else happens. You shouldn't ignore your homepage when creating other pages and provide a link to it on every page that you add to your site. You never know why somebody would want to return to your homepage, and it does not really matter to you. Also, in addition to the text link you should use the logo if you have one, or the header as an entire link to the home page.

If website usability is new to you, then that is one topic you should definitely learn more about. If your navigation is insufficient, then you will have precious few seconds before visitors will decide to leave. What is nice about setting up your navigation is that the principles are essentially the same regardless of the type of site you have.
