Is It Safe To Dye Your Hair When Pregnant?

By Jack Wogan

Most women color their hair either out of necessity or simply because they want change their appearance. Dying their hair is the well-known weapon that makes women feel great. When you get pregnant though you should start asking yourself if you should continue doing this or you should postpone this habit indefinitely.

Even if there have been a lot of studies conducted on this subject it is still unclear if babies are affected by this entire process or not. Also, some hair dyes have been pulled off the maker with the aim of protecting the babies and the future mothers. So start checking out the ingredient list when you are buying your dye and make sure that you don't pick something that contains coal-tar, as this ingredient is very unhealthy.

The hair absorbs very little dye and substances during its lifespan, however it is recommended that you avoid coloring your hair at least during the first three months of your pregnancy. The hair dye is not so harmful as the fumes that women can breathe when they are coloring their hair. Fumes such as ammonia are released when the dye is prepared and placed on the hair. Therefore you should avoid permanent dye all throughout the pregnancy. On the other hand if you cannot avoid getting your hair colored then you should at least try to stay away from all dyes that contain ammonia. These harmful fumes can also be found in straightening hair products so make sure that you don't use them also.

This is the right moment when you should try the semi-permanent hair dyes or even highlighting your hair. Highlights are much safer as they are wrapped in foil and the chemicals won't be absorbed in the skin. Something else that you could try are the vegetable dyes such as henna. They are much safer and you can be sure that you stay protected during your pregnancy.

When you feel that all these hair dyes are not worth using during the pregnancy then you should opt for something else, for instance a different hairstyle or haircut. You should try to cut your hair shorter than usual so that you can take care of it better. Also, if the hair is short then you can style it with a few simple moves.
