Making the assessment to move to a care home can be one of the most difficult decisions you'll ever have to make. And, if you have to make this decision for a friend or a relative it can be fraught with anxiety and worry.
Making the decision to move to a care home can be made with help from your friends and family doctor. You can discuss your concerns with these people and they can help you determine your specific needs, however, the final choice will of course always be yours. There are a number of different types of care homes available to choose between, some which provide minimal care and some which provide more comprehensive care.

Sheltered care homes or sheltered housing is perhaps your first port of call if you are still able to do most things but need the assurance that someone will be in attendance. Most sheltered accommodation is fitted with emergency pull cords which can be pulled in an emergency.

Residential care homes are a step up from sheltered accommodation. In residential care a person will receive help with day-to-day tasks such as washing, eating and bathing. There will also always be staff in attendance 24/7 so that any minor conditions or ailments can be dealt with.

A further step again from residential care is nursing care. In a nursing care home there will always be a nurse in attendance to help with your medical problems. Nursing care homes are thus imperative for those persons who might need complex medical help or have continuing care needs.

Visiting a few care homes in advance before making your choice is really important; you can have a chat with the staff and speak to current residents to find out what the home is like. It's only when you get a good feel for a home that you'll be happy living there.
