Choosing a Dog Bowl that Meets Your Dog's Needs

By Dirk Gruenberg

Most people consider their dog their best friend. This idea also reflects in the equipment that they choose for his everyday use.

One of the most used items is your dog's bowl. So before you buy one you maybe want to think about the factors that make a bowl the best feeding bowl for your dog?

It is your dog's age and your feeding habits that determine what bowl is the right one for your pet. If your dog is still a puppy you may want to choose take the puppy's playfulness into consideration.

This is the stage when a dog is at its most active, often chewing on almost everything including your furniture, your shoes, and their dog bowls. If your dog falls in this category, then it is ideal to get him a bowl that is durable.

It is highly recommended to get them a stainless steel bowl since this can withstand tremendous biting and chewing without getting cracks.

When your dog has grown big enough then you may want to change to bowls made from plastic or ceramic. For even older dogs you may want to consider buying an elevated bowl to make it easier for him to get down to his meal.

The type of dog bowl also depends on your dog's feeding habits. If your dog needs to gain weight, an automatic feeder is ideal.

Such a bowl is attached to a container of dog food or water. This means the bowl will always be refilled automatically. This type of device should only be used in exceptional cases because there is always the danger of your dog getting overweight.

The best you can do is to select a bowl that holds enough food needed during one feeding time. So don't have a bowl that is smaller than this amount of food. The main rule is that a bowl should rather be bigger than smaller and it is your responsibility of how much to fill in.
