Dealing With Diarrhea In Toddlers

Diarrhea in toddlers occurs quite often. It comes as a watery, unformed and loose stool that occurs for over three times in a single day. Many factors contribute to this problem in kids.

The commonest causes are parasite, virus or bacterial infections. Food intolerance and certain medical conditions could also trigger it. Children are vulnerable to dehydration whenever they diarrhea due to their small size. It is thus vital to prevent the kid from becoming dehydrated.

The viruses and bacteria causing it is usually spread quite easily through taking drinks or eating foods that are contaminated. Touching of surfaces which are contaminated with virus and bacteria may also trigger the condition. Kids who put their fingers in the mouth could be affected also.

Treating the condition in children should aim at treating plus preventing the symptoms for instance dehydration which might occur. The focus should be or replacement of lost sodium, potassium and fluids. Dehydration can be easily prevented by giving the child special fluids through the mouth. The child could also be given other fluids like fresh juices and water regularly.

If the condition continues for more than 24 hours, it would be important to call the doctor. Consult the doctor also if the stool is very watery or if it contains pus, mucus or blood or if the child has a fever. If there are dehydration signs like irritability or frequent crying, sunken eyes, cheeks or abdomen, the doctor should be consulted. Listlessness, dry tongue and mouth are also signs of dehydration.

Diarrhea in toddlers occurs quite often as they are usually vulnerable to the bacteria and viruses causing it. Detection of symptoms early enough is important so as to avoid the complications which might occur later. Various ways can be used to treat this condition based on its intensity.
