Dog Training Depends On You

By Frank Hayes

Dog training has many advantages for bonding with a dog and handling unpleasant behaviors your canine friend may present to its owner. These behaviors are, of course, negative for the owner as your pet has absolutely no idea that its behavior is "wrong".

Teaching the dog to succumb to the owner's desires is important. "Sit" and "down" commands are good for the dog to learn how to succumb. When a dog is not required to be equal to the human, it is happier and stays in its normal state of being.
For instance, a young child would be confused and overwhelmed if asked to support a family of four by getting a job and driving through traffic to get to this job. It would be near to impossible with their comprehension of how to accomplish this feat, let alone how to cope with the stress of this task. The same is true for a canine friend.

Trust must exist between human and canine in order for positive dog training to progress. If the animal is afraid of the human or unsure of what the human wants from him, he will become confused and maybe submissive. This may help the owner to become frustrated with not knowing why the dog will not listen.

For housebreaking, crate training is a great choice. The dog has the natural instinct to not soil it's "den" in its natural habitat. The crate is seen as its den so it will not usually have an accident in the crate unless left there for too long. If the owner left the dog in the crate for a reasonable time, the owner could then take his best friend outside and the dog learns to hold its urine until the owner lets it out.

The "stay" command is a good command for the canine friend to learn as it teaches the dog when to obey the owner to avoid such pitfalls such as running before a car and getting hit. Bolting outside before the owner wants the dog to leave the doorway is also a common behavior problem to be rectified using the "stay" command.

Your canine friend must know who is in charge in order to learn how to behave. This is what responsible dog training is. If this respect and boundary is not taught, little progress will be made.
