Ensure Pet Safety By using Pet Travel Accessories

By Rana Gardella

Dogs do not enjoy so many things more than ice cream, cheese and rides in the car. Every dog we have ever had couldn't wait to get in the car. Dogs, similar to people, also get fed up with things and they want to go out and relax once in a while.

Safety of pets in the car were never a matter of discussion for us many years before. We allow our dogs to just go around on the back portion of the station wagon, sometimes even in the front portion (as a matter of fact, our dogs choose the front seat more often - gives them a better look on the outside and make them feel proud like the Big Dog!) and with no restraints. Devices today that are used to secure pets in the car during rides never existed before. Previously, our dogs were free to do what they want, run around, jump up and down on our laps, showering us with many licks as a sign of their gratitude, while I was trying to maneuver the car!

However, the downside to taking your pets on an excursion, to the vet, or just to town can create a distraction. During the early years of my son, we had a Siberian Husky. Every time we go to school, she was allowed to come along. Normally, I open up the window a little bit so she could get a clean breather and smell the outside. This one incident in the morning, she jumped into the front seat when she saw a squirrel scram out in the road making me loose the wheel and us landing on the ditch. My son hit his head on the windshield (there were no seatbelts then) - everybody was fine, but that experience was a good illustration of how pets can cause car accidents. In case that you need to abruptly stop, a little dog with no restraints can be thrown to the floor, or a bigger dog can be thrown into the windshield or out from the vehicle. For this to happen or other instances would be distressing to both pet and owner.

At the present time, we have grown more conscious of our safety that's why gadgets and devices were produced to ensure us a safer ride for our families and pets (part of the family, as well). Doggy seat belts, harnesses, pet crates, barriers, door pop/unlock system for quick pet release in case of accidents, heat alarms to protect your pet from heat stroke or cold, and fans to help pets stay cool are just some of the merchandises in the market. Everybody in the ride will be agreeable if your pet's movements in the car are controlled. Restricting your pet's movements in the car should be equally vital as putting your seat belt on and for other passengers as well.

Some additional tips to ensure a safe journey are to restrain your pet in the rear seat, (air bags could cause potential harm to the dog), no hanging heads out the window - no matter how much your dog begs - it could cause harm to the eyes from dust or dirt, no smoking in the car, no sitting on your lap, and never ever leave a pet in the car unattended on a hot or cold day. Yearly, hundreds of pets get killed due to heat exhaustion or exposure to the cold. Never let your dog ride in the bed of a pickup unrestrained. Enclose them in a cage or crate and bind it so it will not move during the travel.

Drinking water, favorite playthings and bed sheets to make him comfortable are the things you need to bring in case you want to take off on a road trip with your best friend.

To be safe, children need to buckle their seat inside the car as well as your pet needs to have his doggy seatbelt on.
