Get The Pet That's Right For Your Family

By Aaron Lewandowski

Pets are a ton of fun for the whole family, even if that is only a family of one. A good pet is there to give you needed and unconditional affection when you are feeling down. Pets are, however, a tremendous responsibility. People often misjudge how much responsibility that a pet will be and disaster occurs. A neglected or abused pet, in some countries, can lead to a conviction. These laws are a good thing because many animals can be as smart as a young boy or girl, and should, consequently, be treated well.

It is critical that when choosing an animal that you make a firm decision which you are truly willing to live with for a very long time. Many animals can live quite a large number of years... some more than ten years! Take some of the long lived birds for example: canaries and finches can live up to fifteen years. That's a long time for a person to have to own up to and live with a rushed decision!

As a matter of fact, birds are a really good prime example of the importance of good early decision making during animal choice. Not every single person is a bird person. Birds are not really cuddly, they certainly can be loud, and even worse yet... they can bite. Sometimes hard. If you let them out of their cage, and have a window open, they can fly away. However, many people love birds for their beauty, and dependent on the type of bird: their talkativeness!

Dogs, arguably the most common or popular type of pet, in a number of ways are the opposite of birds. Whereas birds are generally not cuddly, a trained dog usually is. Though this is not 100% true, of course! Many dogs can be very aggressive. This often depends on the breed, which whole books have been written on the topic of.

As with most pets, the key to satisfaction, often, is to adopt the animal at a very early age. When an animal is young they are more sensitive to operant conditioning and it is a lot less likely that really bad habits that may frustrate and enrage you have already set in. Engrave this in your brain: one of the most important things to remember when getting a brand new pet is that timing is everything! And by that... I mean timing in your own life. If you don't have a lot of time to dedicate to a pet in its early, formative months and year and a half then don't get one. A truly lonely pet is a neurotic pet, and no one ever likes those.
