Little Known Baby Facts

Learning about the way that kids grow up is very interesting. The way babies grow from a small ball of cells into fully functioning human beings boggles the brains of most people. There is a lot more to infancy than you might think. Sure babies are cute, but they are incredibly complicated creatures. They each have individual needs and wants that parents need to take care of to make sure that development occurs the way it should. There is so much more to infancy development than most people realize. The more you know about how your child is growing, the better you will be at parenting! Did you already know that there are three hundred bones in an infant's body? When a person becomes an adult there are only two hundred and six bones in his or her body. This makes it sound like the bones disappear but the truth is that many of the bones that are separate at birth fuse together into larger bones as children grow up. Some people think that this is one of the reasons that babies are so much more physically flexible than adults, because some of their bones are still able to move about independent of each other. Think about it: how often are you able to eat your own feet as a grown up?

Your baby, in spite of not being able to talk right away, will amaze you with the range of sounds that he or she can make almost as soon as he or she is born. These sounds are possible because the baby's voice box isn't finished forming until the baby is older. The flexibility of a new voice box is what makes the baby's range better than an adult's range. Listen carefully because before you know it your baby will have started to use his sounds for different items. This is how a baby's mother can usually figure out what her child wants just by listening to the sounds her baby is making. Babies first words usually come from the front of the mouth and are often accidental consonants broken up by vowels. It is because of this that a baby's first word is usually "dada" and not "mama": dada is easier to imitate and is almost always a surprise to both the parent and the baby!

Did anybody ever tell you that when babies first start to grow, they grow a tail along with their other limbs? It's a fact! During the first few weeks after conception babies grow tails along with their brains, hearts and lungs.

Eventually the tail will disappear because the rest of the baby's body will grow and mature-the tail sort of gets absorbed into it. This is not that different from the way a tadpole grows to be a frog. Some people, however, have tails that do not completely disappear and they are born with them still somewhat intact. There are two options available to you if your baby is born with his tail still intact: waiting and hoping that it goes away or having it removed via surgery. The good news is that the tail does not have any effect on your baby's health and removing it should not be a problem.
