Making Scented Candles

By Numbers Mercure

When you learn how to make scented candles it is very simple, though actually getting the right consistency of scent is not really as simple. It takes practice and skill to obtain the correct level of scent to wax.

Making scented candles can be as much an art as it is a science. There are steps that need to be followed, but because essential oils vary with the intensity of their total scents, it involves experience to gauge the concentrations and adjust accordingly.

The basic equipment one needs are: a double boiler, a mold and also a source of heat (like fire coming from a stove or perhaps a Bunsen burner), depending on the amount of wax you have to melt. The rest of the things you require are: wax, wicks and essential oils. Molds are in fact optional as some types of candles are made without waxes, or you could even make jar candles, pouring the wax into a glass jar instead of a mold.

The steps are extremely basic. Fill underneath pot of double boiler with water, and place it on to boil. Place your wax in the top pot of the double boiler. You can purchase wax in chips or block form. Chips melt quicker, and it also saves you time, as you will need to cut pieces off of the larger blocks to melt in your boiler more quickly. When you have enough wax in the top pot, immerse it in the warm water to melt the wax.

While waiting for the wax to melt, prepare your molds if you are making candles that require them. Set the wick for each candle, since it will be hard to fix them once you have poured the wax. Whenever the wax has melted and is hot and liquid, you are able to bring it from off of the heat.

This is actually the part when you mix in the oils for fragrance. Pour in the correct amount, stir quickly but thoroughly after which you can begin to pour the wax into your molds. If the wax cools too much and is no longer very fluid just place it back on a lower heat, being careful not to cause the essential oils to evaporate too much.

Slow pouring will help to avoid introducing bubbles into the process which could ruin the finished product, and it also minimizes wick movement. You can chose to use ice to cool the mold and wax faster, or just let it set aside to cool naturally. When everything is cool and the wax has set, you are able to extract your candle.
