Safety Tips for Pets on Rides

By Tyson Davis

There are only some things a dog likes more than cheese, ice cream and riding in the vehicle. Every dog in our possession is always in a hurry to take a ride on the car. People can get jaded, and occasionally they want to feel fresh again, dogs can be that way too.

Several years ago, safety of pets in the car wasn't really our concern. We let our dogs wander around in the hind portion of the station wagon, sometimes in the front seat (in fact, our dogs favored the front seat - has a better vision and feeling more like the Big Dog!), and not chained. Back then, we did not have any gadgets that are now existing to make our pets safer during travelling. Before, roaming about under our feet, jumping in our laps from glass to glass, and licking us constantly as a way of thanking us for bringing them along were freely done by our dogs as I try to keep on the right lane!
Then again, one drawback of taking pets to the vet, or just to town can distract you on your driving. When my son was small, we had a Siberian Husky. We always let her ride with us on the way to school. I usually rolled the window down a little so she could get some fresh air and check out the different smells. This one incident in the morning, she jumped into the front seat when she saw a squirrel scram out in the road making me loose the wheel and us landing on the ditch. That particular day, in the morning, we crashed on a ditch. The reason was my attention got diverted to my dog when she jumped in front seat of the car, a squirrel on the road caught her attention. Lest you had to unexpectedly step on the brakes, a tiny dog with no fetters on could be tossed down to the floor, or a bigger dog could be thrown into the front glass of the car or out of the vehicle. One of these or other situations is sure to traumatize both pet and owner.

At the present time, we have grown more conscious of our safety that's why gadgets and devices were produced to ensure us a safer ride for our families and pets (part of the family, as well). Doggy seat belts, harnesses, pet crates, barriers, door pop/unlock systems to get your pet out fast in case of an accident, heat alarms that protect your pet from heat stroke or cold temperatures, and fans to help keep our pets cooler. Everybody in the ride will be agreeable if your pet's movements in the car are controlled. Restraining your pet in the car should be just as important as buckling up yourself or other passengers.

Some additional tips to ensure a safe journey are to restrain your pet in the rear seat, (air bags could cause potential harm to the dog), no hanging heads out the window - no matter how much your dog begs - it could cause harm to the eyes from dust or dirt, no smoking in the car, no sitting on your lap, and never ever leave a pet in the car unattended on a hot or cold day. Hundreds of pets die every year because of heat exhaustion or exposure to the cold. If you let your dog travel in the bed of a pickup, never unrestrained. Put them in a cage or crate and tie the crate down so it will not move during the trip.

If you are going to take a road trip with your best friend, make sure you have water for your pet to drink, some favorite toys and bedding or blanket from home to add some familiarity to its surroundings.

You would never allow your children to run about in the car, how much more if it's your dog?
