History and Appearance of the Shiba Inu Dogs

By George Cowley

In many cases trying to find the right dog for a pet can be a bit like trying to find a needle in a hay stack there are so many different breeds out there it is next to impossible to know something about every breed out there. This means there are many really nice breeds of dogs who often get overlooked when families are looking for that family pet. The Shiba inu is one such dog.
Among the 6 original and distinct breeds of dogs from Japan, the shiba inu is the smallest. This breed has also one of the longest histories. These dogs resemble with the Akita dogs, but they are much smaller. The Shiba inu dogs measure between 13 and 16 inches in high and are weighing between 17 and 23 pounds.. They have a double coat giving them the appearance of a Husky, with their soft and thick undercoat which is usually cream, buff or gray in color. Their outer coats hairs may measure up to 1 in inches in length and are stiff and straight. These overcoats are often colored in red, black, tan or black tipped (sesame). There are also Shiba inu dogs having their coats white colored, but this color is not so well appreciated in contest and shows, so they are quite rare.

The dogs of the shiba inu breed have their faces very much resembling to a fox, and the males have more pregnant features than females. The red coated Shiba inu dogs resemble so much to a fox that there were cases when hunters mistook them as wild animals and shot them. They have long tails that circle up high on their backs.

You should also know that a chain link fence around your back yard won't be able to stop them, as they love to play, are very agile and make excellent climbers. The Shiba inu dog is also a good jumper, so you will need a high fence for your back yard and be careful not to leave anything similar to a foothold near the fence.

The dogs of this breed are quite energetic and love to play a lot and to be walked at least twice a day in a leash, because they will run the moment you let them free. These dogs will play a lot and run for hours inside the house and from this habit of theirs a contest between owners occurred in Japan, the loser of this game called Shiba 500 being the first owner who gets dizzy watching how a Shiba inu dog runs around a coffee table or a chair.

These dogs are clean freaks, and will often groom themselves much like a cat. It also makes them exceptionally easy to house break as they don't like soiled areas anywhere near them.

This dog may be the perfect pet for anyone who leads an active lifestyle and wants a small partner to share that lifestyle with
