Different Types of Silk Fabric

By Tracy Monroy

Everyday we come into contact with fabrics. Clothing, bedding, decoration, everywhere we go chances are there is fabric in our life. One fabric that everyone knows is silk, and while the fabric itself is commonly well known, not as many people know the different variations of silk there are. Silk fabrics serve a variety of purposes for everyday things, even if we don't always know the proper name of the silk used.

The kinds of fabrics one could construct a special occasion dress with would include taffetas, crepes and chiffon, poult and faille, voile, organdie, and grenadine. Taffetas are typically a shiny fabric that has a rustling or dry feel. Normally, this kind of fabric will be yarn dyed and fine-grained. As a basic cloth, complete of the simplest intertwining of weft and warp yarns. Poult and faille fabrics display clear, cross-wise ribs but are thick, soft taffetas. If these fabrics are crushed while they are finishing, they may be treated more as moire' fabrics. Crepes are assembled of highly twisted yarns ahead of weaving. This provides the fabric a suppleness along with a particular appearance. Crepe incorporates a huge selection of fabric. Voile, chiffon, organdie, and grenadine are matt fabrics but are light. They are made from fine twisted yarns, and the yarns are spaced out so the fabric will appear transparent. Twills are prepared of woven yarns to present an effect of diagonal running ribs and grooves. One will notice this pattern in diamond-shaped, serges, herringbone and diagonal patterns.

The shinier fabrics often fall into the Satins category. This is because in a satin, the intersections of the warp and the weft are hidden, giving the fabric a brilliant, smooth surface with the appearance of yarns laid out, one after another. Satins are made in large varieties. Some examples of satin fabrics include double-faced radzimir satins, duchess satins, Lyons satins, satin crepes with a twisted yarns weft and heavy satin crepes known as charmeuses. Charmeuses are known to have an extremely soft feel.

Scores of fabrics can be derivative from combinations of the aforesaid fabrics. These fall into the group of Composite or Fancy Weaves. Fabrics displaying vertical, straight ribs throughout are acknowledged as reps, regencies or piques. Along with this, fabrics containing varying thicknesses and transverse ribs have been labeled as grosgrains, ottomans, or fluted fabrics. Velvets are a more lush fabric with a surface, to some extent, resembling a short fur. To gain this look, velvets are constructed by trimming the yarns off to the same height.

Pattern weaves are another category of fabrics made of combinations of the main fabric types. These are characterized by fabrics which have a pattern woven into them. The interplay of the weft yarn and warp are how the pattern is constructed. Another term for this patterned fabric is a Jacquard. Differing varieties of these fabrics include Jacquard velvet, Jacquard taffeta and the like. When the pattern includes gold or silver threads, it is categorized as a brocade or lame'.
