Today's Use Of Effective Stink Bug Traps

By Thomas Bleier

The damage stink bugs can do to vegetables, plants and fruit is well known to growers of these products. A number of farmers have lost an entire season's income because of these pests. They are less than an inch long and are nearly as wide, have varying shades of brown, and their back resembles a 'shield'. It is their odor that has gained them their name. On today's market there are a number of stink bug traps available for getting rid of these pests.

These bugs were discovered in 1998 in Pennsylvania, apparently accidentally imported. Currently, they can be found in numerous states, reaching from one part of the U. S. To the other. They have been a pest in Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan for many years.

In colder climates, they have one generation per year. In warmer areas, it can be two or three. Eggs are identified as light yellow, to yellow-red, 20 to 30 in number, and will be found on the underside of leaves. These eggs hatch into small nymphs that go through five stages prior to emerging as adults.

Climate is what affects the life cycle of these pests. In colder parts of the country, they have one generation. In warmer areas they have two or three. Their eggs, which appear on the underside of leaves, are in groups of 20 to 30 and are yellow or yellow-red in color. These hatch into nymphs, which have five molting stages before emerging as adults.

The overwhelming number of these pests has led to the development of stink bug control traps. These appear in many varieties and are used outdoors and indoors. One particular model is placed on trees and uses scent as a lure. Stink bug lights employ the use of a liquid, a black light, soapy water and a scent lure. There are also adhesive tapes, which trap the pests by a sticky substance.

Finding a good trap and following instructions for maintenance is the answer to gaining control of the situation. There are many Internet sites that give reviews of the various traps available and how they have performed. This is an excellent way to determine what kind of trap will work best for you.

These pests are very persistent, so it takes diligence in getting rid of them if stink bug control is to be achieved. Locating effective stink bug traps, keeping them full of the required ingredients, and emptying them on a regular basis are the requirements needed. It is only by getting rid of these unpleasant, smelly pests that you will be able to produce healthy fruit, vegetables and plants.
