What Burglars Look For When They "Case" Homes

By Ursula T Alexander

Homes have become primary targets for burglars. Residential robbery actually makes up quite a big chunk of property crimes. One of the main reasons for this is that different homeowners take different security measures. Some having the most up-to-date security alarm systems, while some don't even keep their doors locked.

To make things easy for themselves career burglars will "case" a community They will scope out an area of homes and get a feel for the area before they break into any homes. They will take note if they notice that some people do not lock doors. They will notice if a homeowner actually has a dog or if they just have a "beware of dog" sign for security purposes. They will also take note of when people are away from their homes.

Burglars prefer to rob homes that are easier to get into. They are known for committing crimes of convenience. For example, in 50 percent of cases burglars enter homes through unlocked doors and windows. This is an incredibly easy way to get inside of a home and most likely means that they will not set off a security alarm system if there is one in place.

Other burglars use forced entry to get inside of homes. If there were no signs that a home had a security alarm then the home would be a primary pick for the burglar. There are of course cases when burglars enter homes that do have alarm systems. These are typically either inexperienced burglars or criminals who may have been keeping an eye on your home but did not see clear signs of a security system. In cases of forced entry having a security alarm is a great benefit because it will scare away burglars and even alert your neighbors.

There are a few other things that burglars look for when they "case" an area. First, to reiterate, they always look to see which homes have security alarm systems and which ones don't. This is their first concern. Statistics actually show that home's with security systems are 4 times less likely to be burglarized. In addition to this, burglars look for homes with loud pets. A barking dog is a great burglar deterrent. As mentioned earlier they look for homes with unlocked doors and windows. And lastly, secluded homes that are not well lit around the outside can also be targets.
