In 1945, he attended the San Fernando Art School where he graduated with a teaching diploma. By this time, his art work was receiving critical acclaim and Nelson Rockefeller bought several pieces. It was due to this endorsement of his work that he soon had the reputation of being one of Spain's most up and coming artists.
He moved in very influential circles, meeting the likes of Andy Warhol and Rita Hayworth. He used his reputation to good effect and persuaded the local government to think seriously about the effects of tourism on Lanzarote.
He championed the traditional style of architecture which had been on the island for centuries. Although he exhibited freely in America, where he was popular, he always returned to Lanzarote. He lived a playboy lifestyle right up to the age of 73, when he was killed in a car accident near his home.
