How To Purchase A Baby Monitor

By Sophia Anderson

Looking for a decent baby monitor is no different than looking for other baby-care products.

It is overwhelming and a little stressful. You're right to want to stay alert about your baby when you're in other rooms, yet you may be having trouble knowing which system is best to use. You're studying prices and are unsure about them. You're inside a store and see so many different kinds of monitors with different features. It's easy for you to start feeling a bit frustrated and a little overwhelmed - but do not worry about it! So let's talk about how to determine which monitor system will be great for your baby and you.

What kind of frequency and channel range do you need?

This way you will still be alerted when your baby needs you but you won't have to worry about missing the signal because of other sound in the room. This system is good for parents who may be hearing impaired as well, because it alerts them of the events occurring in their baby's room, even though they may not be able to hear it, and even if your hearing is just fine, it's a good measure, because sometimes there could be something wrong but your baby is silent as well, depending on the situation.

How much do you want to be able to keep an eye on when you are not in the room? There are baby monitors that keep track of sounds, and there are systems that alert you when there is movement in the room. There are even systems which have full video and audio monitoring capabilities. How much do you want to be able to see and hear? Keep in mind that the type of system you choose is not a reflection on your parenting abilities, so opting to not purchase a full video surveillance system for your baby's room does not mean that you care less about your child than a parent who would purchase something that expensive.

This may not sound important, but it's a great idea to have a system with a low-battery alarm. Of course you don't want the batteries to die during the night, so you'll need a reminder to charge the receiver or replace batteries. It's a great time saver and will reduce worry.

The size, strength and extensiveness of the system are all factors that need to be taken into consideration. If you are planning on having more children, and even if you are not, you should also consider the lifetime expectancy and warranty of your monitor, as well as the price and weigh out all of your options. Your final decision should be one that reflects the needs of your entire household, so that you can choose a monitor which will do exactly what you need it to do.
