The Importance Of Organic Baby Products

By Angela Price

The world has become well aware of the harm that can be caused by pesticides used on crops, and chemicals used on products purchased by the public. One of these crops coming in direct contact with infants is cotton, which is used in many of their needed items. As a result, people are looking at organic baby products to avoid these problems.

When purchasing clothing and other items for an infant, the parent needs to be aware of the chemicals that are used in conventional clothing. These chemicals include things such as flame/stain retardants, heavy metals and other compounds which have toxins. One of the worst is formaldehyde, which contains neurotoxin and is carcinogenic and can cause dangerous side effects.

Care should be taken in selecting any synthetic products. Synthetic fabrics contain chemicals such as ammonia, glycol, benzene and ethylene, which is found in polyester blends, fleece and polyester. It has been shown that these chemicals can produce allergic reactions as well as throat, nose and eye irritations.

This type of cotton is the choice for parents who wish to provide their child with the safest environment possible. To receive this certification, the cotton must be grown on land with no chemicals used for a period of three years. These creations can be identified with a "Certified Organic" label, which is attached.

Caution needs to be taken regarding infant creations that are marked "natural" or "unbleached" as this does not mean that chemicals were not used in growing the cotton. Another label to be found is "Organic, but not Certified". This means that, although the cotton was grown under regulated conditions, dyes containing toxins may have been added.

With the impact of knowledge regarding the dangers of chemicals in everyday life, a new product industry was born. This industry concentrates on producing organic baby products that are completely free of harmful toxins. Parents now are able to make a wise choice in all areas of their small child's care that will insure safety.
