Picking Your Dining Room Suite

By Daniel Akinson

Unlike the furniture in other rooms of a home, the dining room table and chairs are generally subjected to less recreational use and therefore tend to last a lot longer. A little careful planning can ensure that your dining room suit remains stylish and good looking for years.

You can find quite a few sets of contemporary furniture that has amazing quality and durability, no matter what your likes and price range may be - between glass and steel tables to sophisticated Georgian tables. If you have a smaller space, you may want to consider having a folding table that can be stored out of the way when you do not need to use it.

For the More Traditional Minded

Wood furniture that reproduces items from a particular period is generally ideal if you have a formal dining room and formal meals. If you would like your room to be more versatile, give some thought to what designs and styles would stand up to harder use. The dining room is often used as an area for homework, to pay bills and to do projects so your furniture must be up to the task. If your table is to be used for children's art projects, you might need a table that is easy to clean and difficult to scratch. Or perhaps your family likes to gather for more informal meals, in which case heavy, ornate furniture might not be your best option. At the same time, you still need it to be ready for a sophisticated, classy dinner from time to time.

Fancy finishes and veneers may be easily damaged during every day wear and tear, but solid construction that is plain can always be dressed up with a pretty cloth and dishes. In the event that the table of your choice does need to be guarded from these events, you should invest in a table pad and a tablecloth. You can leave the pad on, or leave it off if you have a more formal occasion.

Contemporary Style

Simplicity is the best way a modern dining room shine. The market is full of chairs and tables with smooth lines. Chrome, steel and glass are great contemporary room options, but provided you have a clean, stylized look, about any material will work just fine.

You can really save money and keep your furniture safe with a lacquer or laminate that will hold up against scratches and can wipe clean easily - if you have children that are going to use the table for whatever reason, that is going to be a very good option. Don't try to cover up a modern table, as that will betray the aesthetic, but you can use a unique tablecloth to dress up a conventional table.

Look into the comfort level and usefulness of a contemporary suite before considering buying it; after all, fingerprints are easily seen on a glass-topped table, which might be a downside for you. A modern room can be enhanced with a cast iron chair, but the sheer weight of it might make it difficult to move, especially in a dinner setting.
