Pay Attention to Meat Labelling to Get the Best Meat

By Bill Braggs

In the UK most people eat meat. While the vegetarian and vegan movement is growing in popularity British citizens are slow to give up their meat and veg for dinner. The problem with eating all that meat is that most animals raised for food are kept in deplorable conditions that border of animal cruelty, and are slaughtered in ways that are almost as bad. People who chose to eat meat need to pay more attention to their meat.

There are many reasons to pay attention to your meat and meat labelling . You want to get meat that has been labeled as organic foods. The first reason to do this is that the meat is raised in a way that treats the animals well. That means that they are fed better, aren't in crowded unsanitary conditions, are able to get out into fields, aren't feed antibiotics and growth hormones, and are grown slower.

Not only are the animals treated well but the meat is much more flavorful because the animals get a more varied and more natural diet. The fact that they aren't forced to grow very fast means that the meat is actually more tender and packed with more flavor.

Anyone can label their meats as organic, but not all meats that are labeled that way actually are. The best way that you can make sure that you are getting the right meat is to pay attention to meat labelling. Look at where the meat came from. If it is from somewhere local than the label is more than likely correct. But really the easiest way to get the best quality meat that is grown and slaughtered in humane ways with no animal cruelty is to cultivate a relationship with a local butcher. Local butchers often work with local farmers, so not only are you going to get good meat, you are also buying local and supporting local farmers. Smaller, local farmers are more likely to grow meat humanely than are the larger more commercial farming operations are.

If you are looking for high welfare meat you can also look into finding organizations that offer various certifications. To get those certifications the farmers have to have inspections and meet some stringent conditions and standards. Sometimes the farmers have to pay for them inspections themselves. That makes it in their best interests to meet the standards.

If you find one of those groups, like Red Tractor, you can find farms that grow organic meats in your area. Some farmers will sell the meat that they have grown and slaughtered. Buying directly can save you money, and you can see that the farm is free of any animal cruelty and that any meat labelling is correct.

Many commercial farming operations deal with issues of animal cruelty. Even if there is no cruelty the animals are grown in poor conditions, and are slaughtered in inhumanely. Developing a relationship with a local butcher or organic farmer is the best way for you to get high welfare meat. It's better for you, tastes better, and more sustainable.
