Tips to Help Parents Practice Proper Baby Skin Care

By Sofia Andrade

Baby skin care is more complicated than most people think it is. Caring for your baby's skin means caring for all of a baby's skin. Newborn babies are very susceptible to skin conditions because it takes time for the skin to get used to life outside of the womb. Good baby skin care means making good decisions all day long. Everything you do from dressing your baby to bathing her will affect her skin. Don't stress out too much though: practicing good baby skin care does not have to be intricate or hard. With just a little bit of common sense it can be really simple. This article will teach you what to do while you work on putting together a regular skin care routine for your baby.

Your baby's bath can be short; it does not have to be long. Keeping your newborn baby in the bath tub for too long can be harmful. Limit baby's bath time to three to five minutes each night-just enough time to get wet, get soapy and get rinsed off. After rinsing off the baby, apply a little bit of lotion or moisturizer and then towel her dry. To ensure that rashes and yeast infections don't develop make sure you dry your baby completely. Remember how rolly and polly a newborn baby's skin is! Make sure you use a soft towel!

Make sure to test the temperature of the baby's bath water before you let that water touch your baby. A baby's skin can be easily burned by water that is too warm. Believe it or not it isn't until a lot later in our lives that we start to enjoy baths and showers that use hot water. The best way to test your baby's bathwater is to test it with your elbow. If the sensitive skin of your elbow finds the water too hot or too cold, adjust the temperature of the water. The warmest your baby's bath water should be lukewarm.

This will keep you from accidentally burning your baby or cooling him off too much.

You don't need a lot of soap at bath time to keep your baby's skin clean. All you need are a few drops of soap to totally clean your baby. Using more than those few drops will dry out the baby's skin and make him vulnerable to a host of skin irritations. Don't ever apply the soap directly to your baby's skin. Squeeze the drops onto a washcloth and then use the lather to clean your baby's body. Don't try to lather up your baby's whole body too early--get used to the process by washing one part of your baby's body at a time. Handling a soapy baby can be very scary!

There are a lot of different ways to take care of your infant's skin. You will be glad to learn that taking care of your infant's skin does not have to be very hard at all. All you need is some common sense and the patience to choose the best products on the shelf and your baby's skin should stay healthy and clean with no problems. Remember that you are caring for all of your baby's skin, not just the skin on his face. Keeping your son or daughter's skin clean and care depends on lots of little decisions you make all day long-but don't worry! It won't take long at all for keeping your child's skin healthy to become little more than second nature. Before you know it you won't even need to focus on it to keep your baby's skin healthy. It will be almost subconscious!
