The Younger Generation Should Know The Essence Of Volunteering

By Larry Meyer

Youth today would rather sit around playing video games and being lazy than to actually do something productive such as volunteering. They feel as though they have better things to do with their times than to help others and give back.

Most people do not realize how important it is to give your time to others who are in need. It gives a sense of humbleness and reminds you of all the things you should be thankful for.

Many students and young people will not jump to the opportunity to work for free. The free part of volunteering may not be what grabs their attention, but maybe if they know their peers will look up to them for their good hard work, that will be more of an incentive.

If the youth in question are in school, they can be given points or some kind of merit system for all the volunteer work they perform so that they get a type of reward for the time they put it.

They can receive points or merits for the more work they do throughout the school semester or year. The more work they put in the more rewards they get by the end of the term. You can even give out certificates, gift cards or trophies.

Another way to add some more fun to volunteering is to create groups or teams amongst the class. Allow them to rotate jobs amongst each team so that they all get to do different jobs.

Be sure to congratulate your students on the work they do and make it a big deal for the entire class to see what their peers are doing. Constant encouragement is very important because it will make the students want to keep up the good work.

If you were to give better grades to the student volunteers, this will also motivate them as well as the other students who have yet to become involved.

A little encouragement and motivation can go a very long way with students and can be all the incentive they need. Seeing this, other students will want to be involved as well.
