Choosing A Plumber Can Be Fraught With Anxiety

By Walter Francesa

If you have ever had a burst pipe or a blocked drain you will have needed a plumber fast. It can be difficult to choose a tradesperson when you are worrying about damage and are probably having to re arrange your whole day in order to sort out the problem.

Decisions need to be made fast and most people will accept that this kind of same day service will probably cost more than a regular call out. Often just finding someone who is willing to come round is such a relief that other considerations are put aside.

It is therefore a good idea to have a recommended contact number ready to hand before you have an emergency. Having said that most of us are simply not that organized and will probably rely upon a quick internet search or reach for the local paper.

Many plumbers are self employed local people who rely upon building a good reputation within their community and may therefore offer reasonable rates and quality service. Others may be part of a nationwide franchise and rely upon the brand name to promote themselves and set the prices and services that they provide.

If the plumber you call requires a call out fee, it is worth asking if they will deduct this amount from the total cost of any work carried out, for larger jobs this may well be an option. Smaller tasks that take less time may simply make a one off charge but check first.

Finally remember that if you need a repair on the same day, especially if it is in the evening or over the weekend then it is reasonable to expect to pay a premium. The extra costs that may be incurred if you do not fix the leak, including damage to furnishings or flooring as well as the personal inconvenience you have experienced will be offset against paying a little bit extra for a quick response from a good plumber.
