Why is it necessary to clean your bird feeders regularly and appropriately? Firstly, it is necessary to clean them properly to maintain cleanliness around your area. Secondly, it will give you an advantage of attracting more birds into your place. And lastly, you can ward off disease-causing germs and bacteria. This will provide you and the birds around you with a happy, clean, and healthy surrounding.

So, what are the steps in cleaning bird feeders the proper way? First, you need to gather the things that you will be using for cleaning the feeders. If you have been attracting or keeping birds for a long period of time, then you may already have ideas about the things that you need to gather. But, if you are just a beginner in this type of hobby, you may still lack the knowledge regarding the things that you need to have. To make things clearer, the next part of this article will give you an idea regarding the things you need as well as the steps in cleaning every bird feeder appropriately.

First, you need to gather these things: 2 water containers or pails (one filled with tap water), brush, hot water, bleach or sanitizing soap, and gloves (preferably rubber gloves). You need to wear a pair of gloves to protect yourself and prevent any sort of contamination from taking place while cleaning the feeders. This is because of the fact that there is no assurance that every bird that eats on those feeders is not sick or is not a carrier of any contagious disease. For this reason, it is just appropriate that you wear a pair of gloves. Always prioritize safety above all. You also need to have some hot water for it will be used for sanitizing the feeders. For the brush, it is best to use those types that are being sold in pet stores. But, if you can't afford to purchase one, then you can also use those that are used for regular bottles or you can also use a toothbrush as an alternative.

For the steps in cleaning your bird feeders, you first need to put some water on a pail or bucket. Then, soak the feeder in the container or pail. Put some bleach on the water and have the feeders soaked for 5 minutes. After soaking the feeders, remove them one by one and clean every part of the feeder with the use of a brush. Cleaning every part means cleaning the inside as well as the outside parts of the feeder. Also clean the poles, platforms, lids, and perches. After cleaning them thoroughly, rinse them thoroughly for at least 15 seconds with the use of clean water. This will ensure you that every chemical residue will be removed from the feeder. After that, soak the feeders again in hot water for at least 10 minutes. This will help sanitize the feeders and kill remaining bacteria. And lastly, have those feeders completely dried to avoid the presence of moisture which may lead to molds and mildew. Once they are totally dry, you can already refill them and place them on their proper locations.

Cleaning of bird feeders need to be done on a regular basis. It is recommended that you clean your feeders once every month to prevent dirt and bacteria from growing. Having clean feeders will surely help you a lot in attracting different kinds of birds in your area.
