A Guide To Home Accessories

By Bill McNeil

When it comes to your house, it's the details that say the most about a person. Whether you're loud and crazy or introverted and quiet, home accessories reflect someone's characters just like the clothes they wear. However, instead of spending a lot of money on your decorations and additions, there are lots of ways to get the look you want without spending a fortune.

First of all, figure out what exactly your lifestyle is. If you're constantly entertaining, throwing parties, you should decorate accordingly. Perhaps you're more of a solitary person and prefer to keep things quiet. What kind of family do you live with: toddlers, teens or just your spouse may also help you to broaden your decorative options.

Think of how carefully you put together an outfit to make sure certain pieces match and blend. In the same way, a room should reflect your personal uniqueness. Rooms are like people in the sense that they tell a story. Whatever your room looks like will likely tell a story about you, and thus this is a reflection for any visiting friends or relatives.

Among the most obvious accessories is color. Choose colors you like. If you're loud and have a sunny personality, maybe orange and blue appeal to you. Perhaps you tend to be more quiet and prefer leather to diamonds. Then maybe you should go for a softer color for your walls, like mint green and white, or green and brown. Colors set the mood and theme for a room, and often even affect people's physical mood as well.

Speaking of furniture, it's another important facet to keep in mind. Rolling, rounded and darker pieces reflect a more quiet lifestyle, To the contrary, other might prefer modern, sharper-edged pieces that reflect their brighter colors and more outgoing personalities. It's ultimately up to you how you choose.

There are lots of easy, cheap ways to improve the look of a room. You don't have to spend any money, you just have to use a little creativity. For example, it's possible your kitchen is looking a little drab. Add a new tablecloth and a vase of flowers - real or fake - and some place mats. You'll be surprised how much this brightens things. Paint the trim around windows or put up pictures that have been placed in the attic for years.

The possibilities are endless. The smallest things can brighten up an entire house, and at the same time, tell the story of you.
