It makes no difference if you buy a new puppy or an older dog, you still need to put in the time and effort to train your pet. This article will give you some tips to get started on your endeavor, and you will find a stronger bond forms between you and your dog.

When teaching a puppy basic commands, start with 'sit'. This is the easiest one for a dog to master. Hold his favorite snack just above his nose, and firmly say 'sit'. Most dogs will instinctively sit down at this point. Offer him the treat and don't forget to praise him profusely. If he doesn't sit, gently push his rear end towards the floor. After he has been sitting for a few seconds, give him the treat, and like before, remember to praise him.

A good tip is to get a breed of dog that matches your lifestyle. If you have kids, you'll want a breed that's good with kids. Chihuahuas have become really popular over the years and many families have started buying them. They aren't great with kids however, and a lot of them are being left in shelters.

Timing is essential when you are training your dog, you want to spend enough time training them but do not want go overboard. Start out with a small training session and up the time every day. See where your dog starts not paying attention to the training session.

A clicker and a few treats can be a very effective method of training your dog. Because a clicker can be easier for a dog to understand than a voice command, lessons can be quick and productive. Training sessions should not be longer than about fifteen minutes, since dogs do have short attention spans.

If you are having problems with dog training, then you should look at your training routine. Dogs are much more susceptible to learning if you have a solid routine. All you have to do is keep repeating the commands you want them to learn repeatedly and eventually they will pick it up. Leaving you with a dog that is much easier to enjoy having.

When you are working on crate training with your dog or puppy small steps is what works best for them to get used to it. When they seem comfortable in it with the door open try shutting the gate and feed them treats through the wires. Start off small like 10 seconds at a time and slowly move up the times. If they become upset you are moving to fast.

A dog's name should only be used when positively interacting with the animal. Call the dog's name to get him to come to your side or call his name when you are serving his dinner. Don't, however, call your dog's name when you are unhappy with his or her actions. The dog would negatively associate that with punishment.

Now that you have found some useful dog training tips, it is time to put them into action. Before starting any training, make sure that your dog does not have any health issues that can make training harder. Read up on the specific bread of dog that you have, and have fun with it.
