Invasive And Non-Invasive Damaged Disc Treatments

By Lesa Collins

When back pain is persistent and not responding to painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs, there may be a bigger problem than normal aches and strains. Getting an accurate diagnosis of your problem as soon as possible is important because if it is a bulging disc treatment might be required immediately. A disc which is herniated or damaged is often referred to as slipped; this type of spinal injury is serious and often excruciatingly painful.

Commonly the lumbar region is the region causing the most problems. Incorrect lifting puts strain on the lower back muscles and vertebrae. In order to prevent muscle strain it is important to maintain good core muscle tone in the stomach area, and adopt good posture.

The symptoms of an injured disc are numerous and vary widely depending on the location and severity of the injury. Sharp pains down the leg or sciatica is very common. The pain shoots from the hip through the thigh and can also cause tingling in the foot. Lack of strength in the legs and arms can also be a sign of a herniated disc. If the problem is left untreated paralysis and incontinence can occur. In these cases bulging disc treatment can vary widely from home therapy to surgery.

The vertebrae in the spine are cushioned by discs which comprise of a hard shell filled with a jelly like substance. These discs act as buffers between the bones to stop them rubbing together. If the outer casing is damaged the jelly inside moves to create a bobble which presses on the nerves running alongside the spine causing pain.

Depending on which nerves are affected the pain can appear to be in numerous parts of the body. If the bulge becomes very large and presses on the spinal chord, this is when loss of bladder control and paralysis can occur. It is vital that the exact size and location of the herniation is pinpointed prior to treatment.

Anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to treat minor herniations when combined with exercises which can help push it back into place. Visiting an osteopath, physiotherapist or taking yoga classes can help recovery in combination with drug treatment. When the spine is damaged the muscles in your back spasm and tense to protect the injury and they must be relaxed before any manipulation. Once the back has been realigned keeping correct posture aids the healing of the outer shell. Wearing a back brace can be helpful during these early stages.

When the damage is too severe, surgery might be needed to remove the disc. There are various options such as a discectomy or microdiscectomy which can relieve the pressure on the spinal cord. When the disc is remove often the vertebrae are fused together, this can lead to the problem recurring further up the spine. These solutions are radical and you should seek the advice of specialist before proceeding.

The most important factor before starting any bulging disc treatment it to be sure of where the damage is and how severe. Normal X-rays rarely show sufficient when the disc is herniated. MRI scans are much more accurate at revealing the extent of the damage.
