Baby Facts You Might Not Know

By Logan Baxter

You probably aren't aware of just how quickly babies can change and grow. In the beginning an infant is a single celled organism and within a very short time it is a living being with a heart, lungs and a brain. In just forty short weeks they go from those few cells to living creatures who are able to live on their own. It seems like not very much time passes at all between birth and the time when your baby has very definite likes and dislikes. Things like moving on their own, needing help with diaper changes and even how they learn to speak are pretty commonly understood. Here are some facts about babies and childhood development that you might not know.

The heart is usually already pumping by the time a woman finds out that she is pregnant. It only takes about three weeks for a baby's heart to form and start working. This is usually when most women find out that they are pregnant. Most people find the fact that a few cells can be turned into an organism with functioning organs is such a small amount of time nothing short of a miracle. When you think about how complicated and strong an adult heart is, it is easy to be amazed that its basic structure is built in such a short period of time.

Did you know that some babies are born with teeth? Still other babies are born with no hope of having their teeth come in until they hit their first birthdays.

Teething is one of the things new parents dread the most. Don't worry too much about when your child's first teeth will start to appear. Babies grow at different rates and even if you have other kids who started to get their teeth in at a specific age that is not a guarantee that this baby will follow suit.

A baby can create an array of sounds that will amaze even the most talented vocalist-even though it will take a while before those sounds become anything that you will be able to identify as real words. This is because the larynx (or voice box) is still developing after babies are born. Adult voice boxes have already begun to stiffen up, which is why babies are better at creating new sounds. It doesn't take long for a baby to learn how to assign a sound to an object or idea. This is why a mother can usually tell if her baby's cries mean that he is hungry or tired or that he needs a diaper change. Babies first words usually come from the front of the mouth and are often accidental consonants broken up by vowels. "Dada" is usually a first word because it is easier for the baby to say than "mama" and it is almost always an accident!

As they mature in the womb the organs inside the baby develop but the tail usually ends up disappearing-the body takes over and the tail disappears up into the body. The process is sort of like the way a tadpole's tail gets swallowed up by the body of the frog. There are some people whose tails never get completely absorbed and are born with a tail still in place. From here the parents can choose whether to have the tail removed or to hope that it disappears over time.
