By Jill Germaine

A bandage, which is also referred to as a dressing the medical field, is generally defined as a strip or roll of cloth or other material that may be wound around a part of the body in a variety of ways. These strips of cloth are used virtually by everyone involved in treating injuries-from doctors and nurses to moms and dads trying to soothe their children's injuries. Today, these first-aid implements are available in a variety of types and each are designed to best suit a specific injury.

Among the most important first-aid kit implements are bandages. In a first-aid standpoint, one of the primary uses of these pieces of cloth is to control or stop mild bleeding. The pressure of the bandage helps staunch the flow of blood long enough for the body's natural clotting ability to kick in. Another important application of these first-aid implements is to reduce swelling by decreasing blood flow to an injured part of the body.

Debridement or the removal of dead tissue so that healthy tissues can grow in the wound uses a bandage and helps in the fast healing process of the wound. Moreover, it may used to act as barrier to the wound and other harmful bacteria which may cause infections and harmful effects on the wound. Other than these, bandages may also be used to provide stability for an extremity, to apply direct pressure over a dressing or to hold a dressing in place.

Different human body parts require specific types of bandages which are already widely offered in the market. There are generally four type of this first aid tool available, namely, strip bandages, finger tip bandages, knuckle bandages and the butterfly closures. The strip bandage is one of the most popular types of this first aid tool. Any flat surface with a wound uses this type. Secondly and thirdly are the finger tip bandage and knuckle bandage which as their name imply are wrapped around wounded fingers and knuckles respectively. Finally are the butterfly closures which are used mostly in open wounds in order to pull both sides of the cut back together and protect said wound form infections.

Different materials are also being used in bandage manufacturing. Based on the type of material used, different types of them are also available. The most common among these is the adhesive tape which makes use of adhesive substances n order to effectively offer support to weakened joints and body parts which may be caused by an injury. There is also the neoprene bandage which is mostly made of synthetic rubber. This type is highly resistant to moisture and aging which makes them perfect for sports personalities and athletes. One can also make use of microporous bandages made from soft, non-woven materials are used to fix wound dressings or to secure electrodes for medical assessments. On the other hand, strapping an injured joint or keeping a dressing in place is no problem with the use of zinc oxide tapes.

Treating any type of wound or injury more than likely makes use of some type of bandage. Choosing which among the many types available is difficult as one may never one might happen. It is therefore wise to keep various types, at least two or three in your first aid kits just in ca se you will be needing them
