Dolls have existed for a long time and they were made to mimic the appearance of a real person. Depending on the type of doll, they have been made from different kinds of materials ranging from stone, clay, wood, bone, cloth, paper, porcelain, rubber and plastic.

Dolls are not only playthings for children but have also become collectors' items for adults. Many brands of dolls have entered the market and established their own specific doll figures. Barbie dolls - The American toy company Mattell, Inc. makes the very popular Barbie doll. In March, 1959, the first Barbie was introduced into the market. The woman behind this, Ruth Handler, got her inspiration from a German doll called Bild Lilli. From a German comic strip, Bild Lilli was blonde and sexy. Ruth Handler saw this doll as she went on vacation with her children. She bought three dolls and gave one to her daughter. From using the other two as models, she created what we know today to be Barbie.

Barbie possesses the body of a young adult lady. The doll's popularity grew and became the figurehead of dolls and accessories for the brand of Mattel. Barbie's real name is Barbara "Barbie" Millicent Roberts, who was named after the daughter of Ruth Handler, Barbara. Barbie was created complete with a life story, from her parents, schooling, and career, to finding Ken, her true love.

Many children, teenagers, and even adults have looked up to Barbie because of her fashion and her career. Barbie was made to have a lot of careers to show that women are not meant to be only housewives, but can instead do a lot of things just like men do. Barbie became famous up to this time and has even become a cultural icon.

American Girl - American Girl has its own line of books and accessories in addition to its line of dolls. American Girl dolls are based on ten-year-old girl characters. The stories of the dolls are about the girls of different periods of American history. Contemporary girls are also included in the line of dolls. The stories were intended for young minds, but the issues are quite mature that are behind the stories, and they include war, alcoholism, slavery, animal abuse, child labor, poverty, and racism. In 1986, Pleasant Rowland established the American Girl dolls through Pleasant Company. Initially, their products were only available through mail order. In 1998, the Pleasant Company became a subsidiary of Mattel.

Madame Alexander - Madame Alexander dolls are a line of collectible dolls. The creator of Madame Alexander was Bertha Alexander, who was later known as Beatrice Alexander. She was the first American entrepreneur who made collectible dolls. In 1923, Madame Alexander released her first collectible doll. The first collectible doll released by Madame Alexander was the licensed character of Scarlet O'Hara from the epic story Gone with the Wind. She also honored living people by making a lot of dolls in their likeness.
