Become Effective Parents By Developing Important Parenting Skills

By Peyton P Starks

Being a parent is perhaps the only "job" in the world that requires no educational attainment or experience to be successful. However, you would need to give your one hundred percent attention, love and understanding. While there are some people who seem to be natural born parents and can apparently breeze through all the challenges of parenthood and even thrive on them, not all people are lucky. So if you are one of them, there are a few parenting skills you need to start working on. Patience is the first, and one of, the most important skills parents have to develop.

You have no idea how much of this skill you will need until you have a child of your own. You need to understand that children are children and they are at that stage where they'll get into all kinds of mischief, which is all part of their learning process.

Patience is important because children have no notion of right and wrong to begin with, and it is natural, in fact, expected that they will display some bad behavior from time to time; therefore parents are responsible for teaching them the consequences of this behavior and taking responsibility for both good and bad deed. Teaching is positive parenting skill number two you need to develop. Remember the line that says education starts from home?

Do remember that whatever your kids see, hear and learn, they imitate; so if you want them to be responsible, well balanced and happy individuals, you first need to be the kind of adult you want them to become. You are your children's first teacher about life, so you need to be sure you are displaying the right attitude and behavior in front of them all the time.

Another important skill you need to develop as parents is listening. There will be a million times over the course of your child's life that you need to listen to what they say and not the other way around. This is a great way to encourage your child to articulate their feelings, express their thoughts, and show them you respect their opinions and their individuality. Studies show that most cases of child behavior problems stem from parents not giving time and effort to listen to what their child needs and what their child says.

So listening becomes even more important as your child grows older and becomes more opinionated. This develops strong bonds between you and your child, and it is important that you let your children know they can talk to you about anything.
