The Right Swing For Your Porch

By Christy Lyons

Your porch is the ideal place for a swing because of its strategic location, and the right kind of swing will improve the look of your porch.

A porch swing is a wonderfully simple yet beautiful addition to any home's front or back porch. There are many types of swings that you can place at your porch. Before heading to the local department store and purchasing the model that is on sale, do a bit of research and make sure that your investment is worth it. Some of the models you will find in these low priced locations are just not worth the cost and you will lose much of the benefit of having a porch swing with them.

Your Basis for Selection

There are several things to look for when it comes to a porch swing. The first thing that you should always consider is the construction of the unit. What is your appraisal of the product quality? Of course you must have some idea of what you are looking for before you can make a fair judgment.
For example, select the type of product that the swing will be made out of. The most common materials for porch swings are wood, types of wicker, fabrics and plastics. Wood or wicker porch swings offer more comfort and are therefore preferable materials. The woods preferable are mainly pine, oak or maple. Again, experts agree that these woods are the ideal materials for a wooden porch swing.

Next, consider the swing's seat size and weight limits. The average-size porch swing should be able to seat three adults. You also have options for smaller porch swings. The primary consideration should be the number of persons you envision will use it at any one time - let's say at least two for you and your partner.

Pay attention to the minute and minor details. All the parts should be bolted tight with standard size bolts and screws and no visible weakness. You should feel pretty confident when using it. Even a cursory inspection would show signs that the unit is substandard. Choose a porch swing that don't use nails for its joints. This is not enough of a tight fit for comfort.

Subject the unit to closer inspection. You may, if you want to, add some touches to the porch swings if you are not satisfied with its looks. You can repaint it with your own choice of colors. You can give it a colored or stained finish if it's made of wood. Do whatever pleases you. A good quality wood porch swing would have been stained and waterproofed already. If not, you will need to do this to protect your unit for many years to come.

You need not only to be very selective when you buy your porch swing, you must also give it the proper care and maintenance.
