Interesting Baby Trivia

By Sophia Anderson

You probably already know a few things about babies. You know that they take a while to recognize people. You already know that a baby will understand on instinct who his mother is even within a minute of being born. You already understand that no two babies are going to develop at the same exact rate. There is no set date for walking, talking, forming complete sentences, potty training, rolling over, etc. Unfortunately not many people understand child development beyond the examples already written in this introduction. Infancy is a fascinating period in human development. A life changes so much between the time it is conceived and the time it starts going to school. A baby's body might not look that complicated but it is an intrinsically complicated network of biology whose only goal is to keep developing!

Babies are not skilled at telling the difference between most of the colors they see. A baby's eyes are still developing when she is born and the synapses between and her eyes and her brain are not yet mature. This is why the very best colors that you can use for a baby's room or toys are bright primary colors. Bold and bright colors like reds and greens and blues or even white and black are the easiest colors for babies to see. Babies can't tell the difference between pastels.

Believe it or not, this is why a baby will sometimes favor certain toys. Pastels are meant more for an adult's sense of cuteness while the black and white things that are so often turned down are actually better for your son or daughter's development.

Before they are born most infants are able to understand and recognize different songs and music types. Different songs can be recognized by the time an infant is thirty four weeks along. This is about six weeks before the baby is due to be born! Sometimes the babies will even "dance" to different beats. This means that your child is already showing his or her music preferences-while in the womb! Doesn't that astound you?

While most doctors recommend against consuming mercury while a woman is pregnant, eating non mercury forms of fish can be quite healthy. Eating salmon while you are pregnant is good because salmon is chock full of healthy nutrients for you and your baby and it does not contain mercury the way other types of fish do. There are experts out there who believe that eating fish while she is pregnant can help a mother improve the function of her baby's brain and that will help her child develop superior communication skills later in life-more so than those children born to mothers who did not eat fish. There is no need to worry if you are not a big fan of fish-this is still just a theory.
