Moving to a care home

By Wainwright Dundee

Making the decision to move to a care home is not something to take lightly; there are lots of considerations to be made. If you are thinking about making the move, perhaps the first thing to do is arrange a care assessment.

It's really easy to make an appointment for a care assessment and any one can do it. The assessment will look at your current and likely future state of health and will also take into consideration your own personal wishes regarding your care. Someone will then be able to advise you on the outcome of the assessment and whether you will be eligible to move to a care home.
Having a care assessment does not automatically mean you'll be forced to move to a care home, no one is ever forced to do this, it merely highlights your current condition and gives you a choice regarding the options available. If you make the choice to stay in your own home after the assessment, every effort will be made to help you do this.

After the assessment is complete, you may have a short amount of time to consider your options. If you decide you would like to look into things further, a financial assessment by the council may be the next thing you have to do. The financial assessment will look at the amount of money and assets you have and will conclude whether you have to contribute to none of, part of, or all of your care costs.

It is not always the case that you will have to contribute to your care. In some situations the total care costs will be met by your local council. In other circumstances you may even be offered an interest free loan based on the assets you own, which will only have to be repaid at a later date.
