Reasons For Bed Bug Heat Treatment

By Adriana Noton

Bedbugs have been in the news a lot in the last couple of years. This pest was virtually eliminated in the United States by the use of DDT, but it has now resurfaced. People panic at the thought of having this bloodsucking insect invade their homes, but fortunately there is an effective way to eliminate the problem. Bed bug heat treatment can be the answer for home and hotel owners.

Older people remember bedbugs as a part of life, since this pest is notoriously hard to control. People used to scrub their homes with strong lye soap, douse walls and floors with kerosene, and apply thick coats of paint over walls, floors, and framing in an effort to seal crevices that harbored insects and their eggs. All of these measures, however, were unable to eliminate the parasites who prefer human blood to any other food.
During World War II, the use of DDT finally virtually eliminated this pest. People rejoiced, but the insecticide turned out to have such toxic qualities and environmental drawbacks that it was banned during the 1970s. The rise of immigration and international travel has brought the opportunistic bug back to the US.

The bedbug prefers to live in mattresses, in close proximity to its host. It also lurks in cracks in bed frames, where it lays its eggs. Once it is established, it can spread to other areas of the house, getting into upholstered furniture, curtains, and carpeting. It can even hide in cracks of wall and window trim, making it extra hard to eliminate. Control is possible, although time and effort consuming. Mattresses can be encased in special impermeable bags, carpet can be vacuumed daily and the bags discarded at once, and all fabric items can be washed in hot, hot water.

Travel is usually the way that the bedbug invades your home. More and more hotels are finding that they have this problem, which can get established before management knows it is there. Even if no bedbugs are encountered in lodgings away from home, they can be picked up on a journey. These pests are known to hide in the upholstery of vehicles and hitch a ride home with travelers.

Since heat is effective against both the insects and their eggs, it is a good idea to subject luggage to high temperatures when coming back from travel. One way to do this is to leave suitcases inside a closed car in the sun for two days or more, so high inner temperatures will kill any possible hitch-hikers. Travelers should immediately change and launder traveling clothes, setting the washer and dryer on hot.

In 2012, there is brand-new technology available to professional pest control companies. Specialized machines can deliver whole-house hot air treatments, which can kill both adult bugs and their eggs. This makes it easier to get complete resolution of the problem and calls for less effort on the part of both technicians and the home owner.

Investigate bed bug heat treatment for either do-it-yourself or professional pest control. It may very well be the best thing you can do to rid yourself of this tenacious pest.
