Rarely Known Baby Facts

By Mihaela Wurt

You probably think that babies are only good for sleeping, eating and using dozens of diapers a day. Do you understand why a baby will move his body the way he does? Has someone taught you why a baby grows up in stages? Most parents don't bother learning the specific of their child's development. Other parents decide to learn everything they can about the way their child grows and develops as it gets older.

Did you know that babies are not good at perceiving the differences in colors very well? Babies are born with eyes that are not completely finished yet and only partially formed synapses between the eyes and the brain. The best colors you can use for your nursery and for your baby's toys are primary colors, not pastels. Bold and bright colors like reds and greens and blues or even white and black are the easiest colors for babies to see. Pastels tend to run together.

Did you know that some babies are born with teeth? Other kids don't start getting their teeth in until they are between a year and eighteen months old.

Music can be heard and recognized by babies even before they are born! By the time a woman is thirty four weeks into her pregnancy the unborn baby can identify different sounding songs. A baby can spend more than a month in utero listening to and appreciating different songs. Sometimes the babies will even "dance" to different beats. Your baby has definite tastes and preferences even before he is born! How fantastic is that?

Did you know that at one point your baby had a tail? That's right! In addition to immediately beginning to build major organs, your baby will also start to form a tail during the first few weeks after conception.

As they mature in the womb the organs inside the baby develop but the tail usually ends up disappearing-the body takes over and the tail disappears up into the body. Many people are reminded of the way tadpoles become frogs. Some people have extra long tails that do not get completely absorbed and are born with small tails that are still intact. From here the parents can choose whether to have the tail removed or to hope that it disappears over time.
