As a Gardener You Need the Proper Gardening Tools

By Leonardo Booth

Pretty much every adult has at least one moment of "I would really like to have my own garden!" Perhaps one person dreams of growing his own vegetables. Maybe someone else will be dreaming of lavish rose gardens. It doesn't matter what you want to grow or why you want to grow it; the important thing is finding the right tools to help you grow your garden. Most gardening tasks can be done using your hands and your muscles. In order to save time and save your body (gardening can be hard on it), you should use gardening tools. Here are some of the gardening tools that you can use to help you.

Garden rakes are a must. A garden rake is not the same rake that you will use for raking up leaves in your front or back yard. The garden rake is much shorter and sturdier than the other type of rake and it has teeth that are made out of (usually) steel. Adjustable width garden rakes are far superior to fixed width rakes because you can make them fit into just about any project that you take on. You cannot use a fixed width rake in every project so you should buy an adjustable width rake instead because doing so is more cost effective. You will use your garden rake to even out and level off the dirt in your garden patches.

Pitchforks are great, even for gardeners who only want to plant small gardens in their yards. The work a pitchfork does can also be done by a trowel or a spade but the pitchfork does it on a much larger scale. Pitchforks are great earth turners, compost movers and soil aerators. Compost needs to be turned as it breaks down and decomposes-you will need to have a pitchfork to help you with the turning. If you don't turn your compost pile regularly it will just harden up and you won't get any use out of it.

Gardeners love hand trowels. If you are new to gardening you might think that you should only use your hands to transport your smaller piles of dirt. The more work you do in your garden, the more you are going to start using your hand trowel. This tool protects your hands. Gardeners use trowels to maneuver the dirt surrounding the plants in the garden (without damaging the plants themselves) and to help speed up the weeding process. Hand trowels come in different sizes and can be used for just about any type of plant.

The primary purpose of the hovel is to dig holes. If you want to lift a plant without worrying about getting the root system tangled or doing damage to the plant's root bulb, use a hovel (they can also be used for moving dirt). Hovels can also be used to tamp down dirt as you move your plants or do your seed planting. Most people dream of having their own garden at least one or two times in their lives. When you start your first garden you will be very tempted to purchase every gardening tool that you see in the gardening shops. Every tool will seem useful. The smart thing to do is to start your tool collection with a few items that are useful in gardens of all sizes. After that you should only buy new tools as they become useful to you. This way you will get the tools you need and save money!
